What is Imposter Syndrome

Imposter syndrome put simply is the inability to internalize success.  This happens to over 70% of us at some point in your career when you start to have a persistent belief that they are unintelligent or incompetent at work.

While imposter syndrome at face value affects high achievers thrive in the workplace, we are all afflicted by patterns of behaviour where we fall into a trance of doubt about our abilities despite external evidence to the contrary.

Over time this self doubt that is driven by the voice of our inner critic can have profound effect as we may not apply for or be passed over for promotions at work because we simply don’t speak up and state our value because we don’t believe we are valued.

Solution:

With narrative inquiry we start to learn about the stories we have told ourselves and the role we have taken on in our life.  When we learn how to challenge the automatic negative thoughts that are triggered and we notice “You are not your thoughts, you're the observer of your thoughts.” Thus, moving from inner critic to inner coach!
