What is Self-Image?
Self-image refers to how we see ourselves on a more global level, both internally and externally. Random House Dictionary defines self-image as “the idea, conception, or mental image one has of oneself.” The Mountain State Centers for Independent Living explains further: “Self-image is how you perceive yourself.”
Our self image is often fed by our inner-critic that’s sees a distorted view of who we really are. Our disported view of who we are is most often influenced by early childhood experiences. Based on this view of ourselves we develop either a positive or negative self image. We then spend our lives living out this flawed sense of being or a lack of belonging to our true being.
The absolute key to all personal growth and what is important to remember is that Our self-image is dynamic and changing. Creating and growing a positive self-image is a process that can go on over a lifetime as we create our own “internal dictionary” that describes our characteristics including such things as intelligent, talented, beautiful, ugly, selfish, and kind. These characteristics form a collective representation of our assets (strengths) and liabilities (weaknesses) as we see them.
Solution:
Self-image is important because how we think about ourselves affects how we feel about ourselves and how we interact with others and the world around us. A positive self-image can boost our physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being. When we have a positive self-image, we recognize and own our assets and potentials all the while being realistic about our liabilities and limitations. With a negative self-image, we focus on our faults and weaknesses, distorting or even exaggerating failure and imperfections. Being present and mindful in the moment provides your brain the space that’s required to rewire some of our old negative self image thinking habits and replace them with new, more positive and realistic ones.
