What is Gaslighting? How to know if it's happening to you and ways to overcome it.
What is gaslighting: According to 2018 research, in most instances, the person who’s gaslighting works to make the other person believe that their thoughts, perceptions, or beliefs are mistaken. They do this to invalidate others and maintain a false sense of superiority.
The person who’s manipulating holds enough power, so that the individual on the receiving end is scared to “rock the boat,” in fear of losing the relationship, their job or losing credibility or love in the gas lighter’s eyes.
People who have experienced trauma, prone to sensitivity or are just plain introverts all have an increased likelihood to feels the effects such behavior.
Here are some tell-tale signs to determine if this is happening to you - are you experiencing any of this in your in your life:
Diverting: “You’re just imagining things. What’s going on inside your head?”
Trivializing: “Why are you blowing this out of proportion? You’re getting angry for no reason.”
Gaslighting can be damaging to relationships but can be countered by setting boundaries. Further, by continuing to develop your own self confidence and forming a bond with your true inner voice, you can trust yourself and see-through efforts to invalidate you.
