What Does Being Mindful at Work REALLY mean?
Being mindful is about being in the NOW and truly accepting every part of what arises, while not allowing regrets or anxieties from the past, nor fears/trepidations of the future interfere with how you want to show up in this very moment, not the last one or the next one.
As we relate this to the workplace it's important to notice how our energy/mental power, aspirations, and drive (what we categorize as ambition) can easily be squandered watching other people run their race in the lanes beside us. In turn, our narrative becomes about comparison; needing to be better than someone in some “cookie cutter” way that doesn’t accurately reflect reality and everything you are. We may even falsify narratives in our head to make up stories about how we somehow lack value and don’t stack up.
To unpack what it means to be mindful at work, I’ll provide an analogy: Imagine you’re climbing a ladder on your way to a beautiful destination that includes everything you want – if you see others climbing their own ladders (some higher and some our lower) – is it a better use of energy to knock someone down a rung, or keep climbing up as best we can and even lend a hand to help others ascend? Mindfulness is about compassion, caring and respect for ourselves & others. When we begin to treat others with respect and dignity as runners of their own race, this becomes who we are, and we accept that our success has nothing to do with the performance of anyone else but ourselves.
